The free demo runs from the opening of the game to the end of chapter 1. Square Enix estimates 3–5 hours of play, and demo saves carry into the full game. If you plan to keep playing on a given platform, try that platform’s version; “save carries over” does not mean saves can move between Switch and Switch 2, or between platforms.

What the demo covers

The official press release confirms the demo on PS5, Switch 2, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC, covering the opening through chapter 1. The 3–5 hour figure is Square Enix’s estimate — not a time limit, and not the time needed to collect everything. The demo doesn’t include all of the full game: level caps, total collectible counts and rewards are unannounced, so this page doesn’t invent numbers.

How to download it

Open the official store for your platform and pick the entry whose name includes DEMO — don’t mistake a full-game pre-order for the trial. If you mainly want to feel out the combat, read the turn-based combat page’s timeline and stagger primer first, then decide whether to explore further.

Save transfer limits

Demo saves carry into the full game, but the exact method follows each platform’s prompts. Nintendo has confirmed that saves cannot transfer between the Switch and Switch 2 versions, and no official page confirms cross-platform saves between other systems either.

Route reference (third-party, for context)

Third-party site MeowDB’s playthrough notes for the Steam demo (build 24032336) roughly split chapter 1 into five stretches: leave Grandshelt to investigate the Earth Shrine; pass through Mitra for the Vision tutorial; return to Grandshelt; push objectives between Felicitas and Kol; and cross the Kolobos Ruins to Grandport, then head for the Siren-related objective. Treat this as a sourced route outline, not a room-by-room walkthrough — it has no full treasure or boss coverage, and the author’s playtest and build may change.

One more caveat: Square Enix announced a Sephiroth challenge the same day, but that doesn’t mean it’s inside the public chapter-1 demo — don’t infer trial rewards from trailers or headlines.
