FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE Turn-Based Combat: Timeline, Stagger & Visions

How combat works in FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE: read the action timeline, drain the Stagger Gauge, inherit abilities through Visions, and use Espers as timed summons.

FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE uses command-based turn-based combat. New players should watch the on-screen action timeline first, then decide whether to stagger an enemy before it moves — rather than only picking the hardest-hitting move.

What to read at the start of every turn

The timeline shows the order of actions for your party and the enemies up to the next turn, read left to right. An enemy’s Stagger Gauge sits under its HP bar; when the gauge is depleted, the enemy skips its turn and its defense drops.

Visions & skill inheritance

Story events can grant you a Vision formed from a character’s crystallized essence. Equip a Vision and win battles to unlock new abilities. After you switch to another Vision, abilities you already learned can still be equipped — within a cost cap. Switching Visions does not wipe your learned skills.

Sweeping Stagger & Resonance

The official write-up says that after landing a Sweeping Stagger, you can unleash a Vision-exclusive Resonance at the end of the Extra Phase. Different Resonances deal damage, hit an area, or do other things — they aren’t all pure-damage finishers.

Espers & summons

Espers are powerful summons that fight alongside your party — a different system from Visions, which are equipment that teach you skills. Square Enix confirms Espers join for three turns, then unleash a strong finishing move and leave on the final turn. They unlock as you progress through the story and complete side quests, though the full list and acquisition routes haven’t been spelled out. Treat an Esper as a limited support window, not a permanent extra teammate.

What hasn’t been announced yet

Final-game numbers, enemy exceptions, the full ability list and any “best party” meta have not been released. The mechanics above come from official system notes, not from hands-on testing of damage formulas or boss strategies.
